The Role of Neuronal Plasticity in Dystonia

چکیده
Introduction Herman Oppenheim first coined the term “dystonia” in 1911 to describe a generalised form of the condition with childhood onset, which he called “dystonia musculorum deformans”. In more recent years, dystonia is now recognised as a spectrum of neurological movement disorders characterised by patterned and sustained muscle contractions, resulting in abnormal postures and involuntary twisting movements. In epidemiological studies, it is estimated that the prevalence of early-onset primary torsion dystonia is as high as 50 per million. In the UK alone, it is estimated over 70,000 people are affected by the condition. However, despite the prevalence of this debilitating disorder, the mechanisms underlying dystonia are poorly understood.

The Role of Adrenergic Receptors on Neural Excitability and Synaptic Plasticity: A Narrative Review
Adrenergic receptors have an important role in neural excitability and synaptic plasticity. Despite a lot of studies on these receptors, their exact role in brain disorders accompanied with hyperexcitability has not been determined. There are also controversies on their role in synaptic plasticity. In this review article, the important studies done in this regard have been reviewed to achieve a...
متن کاملHow Many Types of Dystonia? Pathophysiological Considerations
Dystonia can be seen in a number of different phenotypes that may arise from different etiologies. The pathophysiological substrate of dystonia is related to three lines of research. The first postulate a loss of inhibition which may account for the excess of movement and for the overflow phenomena. A second abnormality is sensory dysfunction which is related to the mild sensory complaints in p...
متن کاملHigh neuronal/astroglial differentiation plasticity of adult rat hippocampal neural stem/progenitor cells in response to the effects of embryonic and adult cerebrospinal fluids
Hippocampal neural stem/progenitor cells (hipp-NS/PCs) of the adult mammalian brain are important sources of neuronal and gial cell production. In this study, the main goal is to investigate the plasticity of these cells in neuronal/astroglial differentiations. To this end, the differentiation of the hipp-NS/PCs isolated from 3-month-old Wistar rats was investigated in response to the embryonic...
متن کاملThe role of NMDA receptor subunits in the regulation of synaptic plasticity in dorsomedial striatum in a model of paroxysmal dystonia Dissertation
Dystonias are movement disorders whose pathomechanism is largely unknown. The dt dystonic hamster mutant represents a model of primary paroxysmal dystonia, where alterations of striatal interneuron density and long term potentiation were described (Köhling et al., 2004, Gernert et al., 2000). In the present thesis, using corticostriatal slices, we explore in more detail whether long-term potent...
متن کاملMorphine Consumption During Lactation Impairs Short-Term Neuronal Plasticity in Rat Offspring CA1 Neurons
Background: Facing environmental factors during early postnatal life, directly or indirectly via mother-infant relationships, profoundly affects the structure and function of the mammals’ Central Nervous System (CNS). Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of morphine consumption during the lactation period on short-term synaptic plasticity of the hippocampal Cornu Ammonis 1 (C...
متن کاملConvergent evidence for abnormal striatal synaptic plasticity in dystonia.
Dystonia is a functionally disabling movement disorder characterized by abnormal movements and postures. Although substantial recent progress has been made in identifying genetic factors, the pathophysiology of the disease remains a mystery. A provocative suggestion gaining broader acceptance is that some aspect of neural plasticity may be abnormal. There is also evidence that, at least in some...
